We came to visit Jabir bin Abdullah, and he asked each of those present who he was until he reached me. I said, "I am Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn."He reached his hand toward my head and undid my upper button, then my lower button, and placed his palm on my chest. I was a young lad at the time. Then he said, "Welcome, son of my brother. Ask whatever you wish."So I questioned him. The time for prayer arrived, and he rose wrapped in a single woven garment. Every time he laid it over his shoulders its two ends slipped back, so small was it, while his cloak lay beside him on the clothes rack. He led us in prayer.I said, "Tell me about the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He signalled with his hand, folding down nine fingers, and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained nine years without performing Hajj. Then in the tenth year it was announced among the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was going on Hajj, and a great many people came to Madinah, every one of them hoping to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and to do exactly as he did."We set out with him until we reached Dhul-Hulayfa. There Asma bint Umays gave birth to Muhammad bin Abu Bakr, and she sent word to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking, 'What should I do?'"He said, 'Bathe, bind yourself with a cloth, and enter the state of consecration.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in the masjid, then mounted Qaswa. When his camel had risen with him on Bayda, I looked as far as my eye could reach and saw riders and men on foot in front of him, and as many on his right, and as many on his left, and as many behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was there in our midst, and the Quran was coming down upon him, and he knew its meaning. Whatever he did, we did."He raised the call proclaiming the oneness of Allah, 'Here I am, Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Praise and blessing belong to You, and sovereignty. You have no partner.'"The people also raised the calls they had been used to raising, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rejected nothing of that from them, while he himself kept to his own call."Jabir said, "We intended nothing but Hajj. We knew nothing of Umrah in this connection. When we reached the House with him he touched the corner, then went briskly around three times and walked four. Then he moved on to the standing place of Ibrahim and recited, 'And take the standing place of Ibrahim as a place of prayer' [Baqarah 2:125]. He put the standing place between himself and the House."My father used to say, and I do not know that he mentioned it except from the Prophet ﷺ, that in the two units of prayer he recited "Say, He is Allah, the One" [Ikhlas 112:1] and "Say, you disbelievers" [Kafirun 109:1]."Then he returned to the corner and touched it, then went out through the gate toward Safa. When he drew near Safa he recited, 'Indeed Safa and Marwa are among the rites of Allah' [Baqarah 2:158], and said, 'I begin with what Allah began with.'"So he began with Safa and climbed it until he could see the House. Facing the qibla, he declared Allah's oneness and greatness and said, 'There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner. His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah alone. He has fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, and by Himself defeated the confederates.' Then he made supplication in between, saying this three times."Then he went down toward Marwa, and when his feet came down into the bed of the valley he ran, and when we began to climb he walked, until he reached Marwa. On Marwa he did as he had done on Safa. When he came to his final passage at Marwa he said, 'Had I known at the outset what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals, and I would have made this an Umrah. So whoever among you has no sacrificial animal with him, let him leave the state of consecration and make this an Umrah.'"Suraqa bin Malik bin Jusham stood up and asked, 'Messenger of Allah, is this for this year of ours only, or forever?'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ interlaced his fingers, one set into the other, and said twice, 'Umrah has entered into Hajj.' Then he said, 'No, rather forever and ever.'"Ali arrived from Yemen with the Prophet's ﷺ sacrificial camels, and he found that Fatimah
was among those who had left the state of consecration. She had put on dyed clothes and applied kohl, and he objected to this."She said, 'My father told me to do this.'"Jabir said, "Ali used to say when he was in Iraq, 'So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to complain about Fatimah for what she had done and to ask him about what she had reported from him. I told him that I had objected to it."'He said, "She has spoken the truth, she has spoken the truth. What did you say when you undertook the Hajj?""'I said, "I said, Allah, I enter upon what Your Messenger has entered upon.""'He said, "Then I have the sacrificial animals with me, so do not leave the state of consecration."'"Jabir said, "The total of the animals that Ali brought from Yemen and those the Prophet ﷺ had brought was a hundred. All the people then left the state of consecration and shortened their hair, except the Prophet ﷺ and those who had a sacrificial animal with them."On the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah they set out for Mina and raised the call for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode there and prayed Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, the night prayer, and Fajr there. Then he waited a little until the sun had risen, and he gave orders for a tent of hair to be pitched for him at Namira."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ travelled on, and Quraysh had no doubt at all that he would halt at Mashar Haram, as Quraysh used to do in the days of ignorance. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed on until he came to Arafah, where he found the tent pitched for him at Namira, and he stopped there."When the sun had passed its zenith he ordered Qaswa to be saddled for him. He came to the bed of the valley and addressed the people, saying, 'Your blood and your property are sacred to you, as sacred as this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Every practice of the age of ignorance lies trampled beneath my feet. The blood feuds of that age are annulled, and the first blood claim I annul of our own is that of the son of Rabia bin Harith.'"He had been out with a wet nurse among Banu Saad, and Huzayl killed him."'The usury of the age of ignorance is annulled, and the first usury I annul of ours is the usury of Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib. All of it is annulled."'Fear Allah concerning women. You have taken them under Allah's guarantee, and you have made intimacy with them lawful by Allah's word. Your right over them is that they not let anyone you dislike lie upon your bedding. If they do that, then strike them, but not harshly. Their right over you is that you provide for them and clothe them in a fitting manner."'I have left among you something after which you will never go astray if you hold fast to it, the Book of Allah. You will be asked about me, so what will you say?'"They said, 'We bear witness that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled your trust, and given sincere counsel.'"Raising his forefinger toward the sky and pointing it down toward the people, he said three times, 'Allah, bear witness. Allah, bear witness.'"Then the call to prayer was given, followed by the call to stand, and he prayed Dhuhr. Then came another call to stand, and he prayed Asr, praying nothing between the two."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode until he came to the standing place, and he set his camel Qaswa facing the rocks, with the pedestrians' path in front of him, and faced the qibla. He remained standing until the sun set and the yellow light had somewhat faded, until the disc had disappeared."He seated Usama behind him and set off, having drawn Qaswa's reins so tight that her head almost touched the pommel of his saddle, and he was saying, gesturing with his right hand, 'People, calmly, calmly.' Whenever he came to one of the sandhills he loosened her reins a little so that she could climb, until he reached Muzdalifa. There he prayed Maghrib and the night prayer with one call to prayer and two calls to stand, offering no voluntary prayer between them."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay down until dawn broke, and he prayed Fajr when the morning was clear to him, with one call to prayer and one call to stand. Then he mounted Qaswa and came to Mashar Haram, where he faced the qibla and called upon Allah, declaring His greatness, His uniqueness, and His oneness. He remained standing there until the light was full, then set off before sunrise."He seated Fadl bin Abbas behind him, a man with beautiful hair, fair and handsome. As the Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved off, some women passed by on camels, moving quickly, and Fadl began to look at them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand over Fadl's face, and Fadl turned his face to the other side to keep looking, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved his hand to that other side of Fadl's face, turning it away as he kept trying to look."He continued until he came to the valley of Muhassir, where he urged his mount on a little. Then he took the middle road that comes out at the great stone pillar, until he reached the pillar that is by the tree. He threw at it seven pebbles, proclaiming Allah's greatness with each one, pebbles small enough to flick with the fingers, and he threw from the bed of the valley."Then he went to the place of sacrifice and sacrificed sixty-three animals with his own hand. Then he gave the rest to Ali, who sacrificed what remained, and he made him a partner in his sacrifice. Then he ordered that a piece be taken from every animal, and it was put in a pot and cooked, and the two of them ate of its meat and drank of its broth."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode on and made the circuit of the House, and prayed Dhuhr in Makkah. He came to the sons of Abdul-Muttalib, who were drawing water for people at Zamzam, and said, 'Draw on, sons of Abdul-Muttalib. Were it not that people would take over your right to supply the water, I would draw along with you.'"So they handed him a bucket and he drank from it."
Muslim narrated it in the book of Hajj (1218) through several chains from Hatim bin Ismail, from Jafar bin Muhammad, with the same chain, and he mentioned it.A summary of the matter regarding the ihram declaration of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the ihram declaration of Ayesha, as Muslim narrated it in the chapter explaining the different forms of ihram, and that it is permissible to perform Hajj alone (ifrad), or Hajj combined with Umrah in sequence (tamattu), or Hajj and Umrah together (qiran), and the permissibility of incorporating Hajj into Umrah, and when one performing qiran becomes free from ihram, along with the hadith of the Prophet's Farewell Hajj as narrated by Jabir. The narrations regarding the ihram of the Prophet ﷺ and the ihram of Ayesha in the Sahihayn have shown some variation. Some scholars concluded that certain narrations were daif, while others sought to reconcile them and interpret whatever seemed to contradict them. Here I will lay out these narrations in an organized manner and respond to the apparent contradictions. I say, and success comes from Allah alone,The Prophet ﷺ announced in the tenth year that the rites of Hajj would be performed, so people set out from the cities, the villages, and the desert encampments, all wishing to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and do as he did. They expressed this by saying, "We have set out for Hajj," or "We intend nothing but Hajj," and this was before they left Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ left Madinah on the twenty fifth of Dhul-Qaidah and spent the night at Zulhulayfa. There Asma bint Umays gave birth to Muhammad bin Abu Bakr, so she sent word to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking, "What should I do?" He said, "Perform ghusl, bind yourself with a cloth, and enter ihram." When morning came, he gave the people the choice of declaring ihram for Hajj, or for Umrah, or for both Hajj and Umrah together. He himself declared ihram for Hajj, while Ayesha, along with the Prophet's other wives, declared ihram for Umrah. When he had prayed Dhuhr shortened, he mounted his camel Qaswa, and when it stood up straight beneath him, he declared the oneness of Allah, saying, "Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la sharika laka labbayk, inna al-hamda wan-nimata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak." Some of the people heard his talbiyah at the masjid, others heard it near the tree, and others heard it at Bayda. The Messenger of Allah bought sacrificial animals along the way, just as those among them with means, such as Abu Bakr and Umar and others, also did. When he reached Sarif, which is close to Makkah, the people expressed a desire to turn their Hajj into Umrah, so he said, "Whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal with him and wishes to make it Umrah may do so, but whoever has a sacrificial animal with him may not."Ayesha came in weeping, so he asked, "Have you begun menstruating?" meaning her monthly cycle, and she said, "Yes." He said, "This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. Leave your Umrah, undo your hair, comb it, and declare ihram for Hajj. Perform all the rites the pilgrim performs, except that you must not perform tawaf around the House until you have done ghusl."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Makkah on the fifth of Dhul-Hijjah. He performed tawaf around the House and went between Safa and Marwa, and when he reached the end of his circuit at Marwa, he commanded that whoever did not have a sacrificial animal should exit ihram. The people asked, "Exit to what extent?" He said, "Exit completely. Perform tawaf around the House and between Safa and Marwa, and shorten your hair, and remain out of ihram until the day of Tarwiya, when you will declare ihram again for Hajj. Turn what you brought as Hajj into a tamattu Umrah."They said, "How can we turn it into Umrah when we have already named our intention as Hajj?" He said, "Do as I command you." Then Suraqa bin Malik bin Jutham asked, "Messenger of Allah, is this ruling for this year only, or forever?" He replied, "No, it is forever."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then came to Ayesha while angry, and she said, "Who has angered you, Messenger of Allah? May Allah cast him into the Fire." He said, "Do you not realize that I commanded the people to do something, and now they are hesitating? Had I known beforehand what I later came to know, I would not have brought sacrificial animals with me, and I would have exited ihram myself. You know that I am the most God fearing among you, the most truthful, and the most righteous. Were it not for the sacrificial animal, I would exit ihram just as you are exiting it, but nothing forbidden becomes lawful for me until the sacrificial animal reaches its place." So they complied. As for his wives, since they had not brought sacrificial animals, they exited ihram. That is to say, had he known before entering ihram what he came to know afterward, of the people's hesitation and their waiting to see him exit ihram, he would have declared ihram for Umrah alone and would not have brought a sacrificial animal with him.So the people exited ihram, engaged in relations with their wives, applied perfume, wore their regular clothing, and then entered ihram again on the day of Tarwiya from Abtah, that is, from the place where they were staying, and set out toward Mina.Ayesha became pure from her menstruation at Arafah, and she performed tawaf around the House and went between Safa and Marwa. The Prophet ﷺ told her, "You have now completed both your Hajj and your Umrah." She said, "Messenger of Allah, I feel troubled that I did not perform tawaf around the House before my Hajj began. Will the other people return with two rewards while I return with only one?"So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakr with me, and he instructed me to perform Umrah from Tanim in place of the Umrah I had been prevented from completing when Hajj overtook me before I had exited ihram from it. We then set out and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was at Hasba, and he asked, "Have you finished?" I said, "Yes." So he announced departure to his companions. She said that no sacrificial animal, charity, or fasting was required for this. She also said that the Messenger of Allah sacrificed cattle on behalf of his wives. Then Safiyya, the Mother of the Believers, said, "It seems I will be the one holding everyone back." He said, "May you be afflicted, did you not perform tawaf on the day of sacrifice?" She said, "Yes, I did." He said, "Then there is no problem, you may set out."The Messenger of Allah then set out, passed by the House, performed tawaf around it before the dawn prayer, and then departed for Madinah.
