The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us while we were at Mina, "Tomorrow we will camp at the valley of Banu Kinanah, where they swore an oath upon disbelief." This refers to the time when Quraysh and Banu Kinanah made a pact against Banu Hashim and Banu Abdul-Muttalib, or Banu Muttalib, that they would neither intermarry with them nor trade with them until they handed over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By this he meant Muhassab.
Bukhari related it in the Hajj (1590), and Muslim in the Hajj (1314: 344), via Walid bin Muslim, who said, "Uzai narrated to us, Zuhri narrated to me, Abu Salama narrated to me, Abu Hurairah narrated to us," and he related it. The wording given is that of Muslim. Bukhari's wording is similar, but he added at the beginning, "The Prophet ﷺ said, on the day after the Day of Sacrifice, while at Mina... etc."In another version narrated by Bukhari in the Maghazi (4284), and by Muslim, via Araj (Abdul-Rahman bin Hurmuz), from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "Our stopping place, if Allah wills, once Allah grants the conquest, will be Khayf, where they pledged to remain in disbelief."In another version narrated by Bukhari in the Hajj (1589), via Shuayb, from Zuhri, with the same chain, he said, "The Messenger of Allah said, when he intended to enter Makkah, 'Our stopping place,'" and he related it up to his words, "in disbelief."In another version narrated by Bukhari in the Manaqib (3882), via Ibrahim bin Saad, from Ibn Shihab, with the same chain, he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, when he intended to march to Hunayn, 'Our stopping place tomorrow,'" and the hadith continues up to his words, "in disbelief."I say, there is no contradiction between these versions, since it is possible to explain them as referring to different occasions. His words, "at Khayf of Banu Kinana," are explained in the hadith as referring to Muhassab, and it appears that this explanation comes from the Imam Zuhri, may Allah have mercy on him.Ibn Hajar said, "It occurs to me that everything after his words, 'meaning Muhassab,' to the end of the hadith, is from the words of Zuhri, inserted into the report."
