He gave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a wild donkey as a gift while he was at al-Abwa or Waddan, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned it to him.He said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw the look on my face, he said, 'We only returned it to you because we are in a state of ihram.'"
أنه أهدى لرسول الله ﷺ حمارا وحشيا، وهو بالأبواء أو بودان فرده عليه رسول الله ﷺ قال: فلما رأى رسول الله ﷺ ما في وجهي. قال: إنا لم نرده عليك إلا أنا حرم.
Malik narrated it in Hajj (83) from Ibn Shihab, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba bin Masud, from Abdullah bin Abbas, from Saab bin Jathama, in the same manner.Bukhari narrated it in "The Reward for Hunting" (1825), and Muslim in Hajj (1193), both through the route of Malik, in the same manner. Bukhari gave it the chapter heading, "When a live wild donkey is given as a gift to one in the state of Muharram, he does not accept it."Tirmidhi said, after citing the hadith through the route of Zuhri, "Some of the companions of Zuhri narrated this hadith from Zuhri and said that he was given the meat of a wild donkey as a gift, but this is not preserved (ghayr mahfuz)."I say, Shafii said the same, as will come later.
