I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entering the state of ihram with his hair matted down.
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يهل ملبدا.

Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1540), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1184:21), both through the route of Ibn Wahb, who said, Yunus told me, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim, from his father, in this same wording. Their wording is identical, and Muslim added the words of the talbiyah. As for what Abu Dawud narrated (1748) through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, "that the Prophet ﷺ matted his hair with honey," this contains Muhammad bin Ishaq, who is a mudallis and who narrated it using an ambiguous form of transmission without stating it clearly, and I have not found anyone who corroborated him on this.
