Abu Umama Bahili reported,

The Messenger of Allah stood before the people and said, "Hajj has been prescribed for you."A man from among the Arabis stood up and asked, "Every year?"At this the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ speech came to a halt. He fell silent, showed his displeasure, and remained quiet for a long while. Then he spoke and asked, "Who is the questioner?"The Arabi said, "It is I."He said, "Woe to you, what made you feel safe from my saying yes? By Allah, had I said yes, it would have become obligatory, and had it become obligatory, you would have rejected it. Be warned, those before you were destroyed only by leaders of undue strictness. By Allah, if I made everything on earth lawful for you and forbade you only the space of a hoof, you would fall into that."He said, at that moment Allah revealed, "You who believe, do not ask about things which, if made clear to you, would trouble you" to the end of the verse [Maidah 5:101].
