Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed itikaf, his bedding and couch would be placed for him by the Pillar of Tawba on the side facing the qiblah, and he would lean against it.
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان إذا اعتكف طرح له فراشه و سريره إلى أسطوانة التوبة مما يلي القبلة، ثم يستند إليها.
Ibn Khuzayma narrated it (2236), as did Tabarani in Al-Kabir (12/385) and Al-Awsat (8071), and Fakihi in his Fawaid (97), and from his route Bayhaqi in Sunan al-Kubra (5/247), all of them through the route of Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad (that is, Darawardi), from Isa bin Umar bin Musa, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar.In its chain is Isa bin Umar bin Musa bin Ubaydullah bin Mamar Qurashi Taymi, a Hijazi. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat (8/489) and said, "He narrates truncated reports." Daraqutni said, "He is known, and is used for corroboration," as stated in the Questions of Barqani (388). Hafiz said in Taqrib, "Acceptable," meaning when corroborated, otherwise his hadith is weak, but he was not corroborated on this report, rather he narrated it alone. As for Darawardi, he was not alone in narrating it, for Abdullah bin Mubarak corroborated him. Ibn Majah narrated it (1774) through the route of Naeem bin Hammad, who said, Ibn Mubarak narrated to us, from Isa bin Umar bin Musa, with the same wording, mentioning it just as Ibn Khuzayma did, except that neither of them included his statement, "on the side facing the qibla, then he leaned against it." In its chain is Naeem bin Hammad Marwazi, who is truthful but makes many mistakes, as stated in Taqrib. The conclusion is that the report turns on Isa bin Umar, whom none whose grading carries weight has affirmed as reliable, yet he is known, as Daraqutni said, and a group of trustworthy narrators reported from him. So his hadith may be regarded as hasan, and Allah knows best.As for Busiri's statement in Misbah Zujaja (2/43), "This is a sahih chain, its narrators are all deemed reliable," this reflects a degree of laxity, as is evident. The Pillar of Repentance is the one against which Abu Lubaba bin Abdul-Mundhir bound himself, and it is not oriented toward the qibla, as Ibn Khuzayma stated.
