Ahmad (23129) narrated it from Muhammad bin Jafar, who said, Shuba narrated to us from Abu Ishaq, that he heard Abu Huzaifa narrating from a man among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and he mentioned it. Abu Ishaq said, "The moon only appears like that on the morning of the twenty-third night."Ahmad (793) and Abu Yaala (525) both narrated it from the hadith of Hudayj bin Muawiya, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Huzaifa, from Ali, from the Prophet ﷺ, and he mentioned it similarly, except that Abu Yaala said in it, "as if it were the half of a bowl."This chain of transmission is daif because of Hudayj bin Muawiya, for he had poor memory. Perhaps this was one of his errors, that he narrated it from Abu Ishaq and made the hadith part of the musnad of Ali, while Shuba and others narrated from Abu Ishaq and left the companion unnamed. The narration of Shuba is closer to being correct. The error may also have come from Abu Ishaq himself, for Shuba narrated from him before his memory became confused, while perhaps Hudayj bin Muawiya narrated from him after his memory became confused.Daraqutni was asked about the hadith of Shuba, and he said, "It is the one that is preserved." See Ilal (5/186).Abu Huzaifa's name was Salama bin Suhayb.As for Abu Ishaq's statement that the moon only appears like that on the morning of the twenty-third night, it has already been mentioned that Abu Hasan Farsi held the view that it was the twenty-seventh night. Both of these statements are merely estimates on their part.
