I was approached while I was asleep during Ramadan, and it was said to me, "Tonight is Laylat al-Qadr."I got up while still drowsy and held on to one of the ropes of the tent of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and found him praying. I checked which night it was, and it was the twenty-third night.
Ahmad (2302, 2547) and Tabarani in al-Kabir (11/292-293) both narrated it from the hadith of Abu Ahwas, who said, Simak informed us, from Ikrima, who said, Ibn Abbas said (and he mentioned it).Its isnad is hasan because of Simak, who is Ibn Harb bin Aws Dhuhali, concerning whom there is disagreement, except that his hadith is hasan apart from his narration from Ikrima, in which he was inconsistent. This is the accepted position regarding his narration from Ikrima, unless something is found to support it, in which case his hadith becomes hasan. As for his statement, "so it turned out to be the night of the twenty third," it has a sahih corroborating witness in the hadith of Abdullah bin Unays, so it is most likely that he was not inconsistent in this instance. It has also been reported from Ibn Abbas that he used to wake his family on the night of the twenty third.Ibn Abbas has several hadiths concerning Laylat al-Qadr, and they do not contradict one another. It may be that he spoke of this on one occasion and of that on another. This is the same situation as with the other hadiths concerning Laylat al-Qadr from other companions.
