The Prophet ﷺ was praying at night during Ramadan when a group of people came and stood behind him to pray with him. He prayed briefly, then entered his house and prayed there, then came back out and prayed briefly again.When morning came, they said, "Messenger of Allah, we stood behind you last night, but you would enter your house and then come back out. Why?"He replied, "I only did that for your sake."
أن النبي ﷺ كان يصلي بالليل في رمضان، فجاء قوم فقاموا خلفه، فصلى فكان يخفف، ثم يدخل بيته فيصلي، ثم يخرج ويخفف. فلما أصبح، قالوا: يا رسول الله، قمنا خلفك الليلة، فكنت تدخل بيتك ثم تخرج؟ فقال: إنما فعلت ذلك من أجلكم.

Tabarani narrated it in Awsat (8204) from Musa bin Harun, who said, Ishaq bin Rahawayh told us, who said, Nadr bin Shumayl informed us, who said, Hammad bin Salama told us, who said, Thumama informed us, from Anas, and he mentioned it. Its isnad is sahih, and Thumama is Ibn Abdullah bin Anas bin Malik, trustworthy, one of the men of the Sahih. Ibn Adi said, "He has hadiths from Anas. I hope there is no harm in him, and his hadiths are close to those of others. He is sound in what he narrates from Anas, in my view." Haythami attributed it in Majma (3/173) to Awsat, and said, "Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih."On this subject there is also a report from Abu Hurairah, who said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and found some people in Ramadan praying in a corner of the masjid. He said, "Who are these?" It was said, "These are people who do not have Quran with them, and Ubayy bin Kaab is praying, and they are praying following his prayer." The Prophet ﷺ said, "They have done well, and how excellent is what they have done."Abu Dawud narrated it (1377) from Ahmad bin Saeed Hamdani, who said, Abdullah bin Wahb told us, Muslim bin Khalid informed me, from Ala bin Abdul-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it.Its isnad contains Muslim bin Khalid, known as Zanji. Dhahabi said in Kashif, "He was deemed trustworthy, but Abu Dawud graded him daif because of his many errors." Al-Hafiz said in Taqrib, "A jurist, truthful, but with many mistakes." That is why Abu Dawud said following the hadith, "This hadith is not strong. Muslim bin Khalid is daif." Ibn Madini said of him, "He is nothing." Bukhari said, "His hadith is objectionable. His hadith is written down but not relied upon. Some of it is recognized and some of it is rejected." Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat and said, "He errs occasionally." Uthman Darimi reported from Ibn Main, "Trustworthy."The hadith was also narrated by Ibn Khuzayma (2208), and from him Ibn Hibban (2541), by way of Ibn Wahb, with the same wording.It has also been narrated as mursal by way of Thalaba bin Abu Malik Qurazi. Bayhaqi narrated it (2/495) by way of Bahr bin Nasr, who said, "It was read to Abdullah bin Wahb, [who said] Abdul-Rahman bin Salman and Bakr bin Mudar informed you, from Ibn Hadi, that Thalaba bin Abu Malik Qurazi told him, he said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one night during Ramadan...'" and the rest of the hadith.Bayhaqi said, "This is a hasan mursal report." He said, "It has also been narrated with a connected isnad, but it is daif." He then narrated the previously mentioned hadith of Khalid Zanji by way of Abu Dawud. He also narrated it in Marifa (4/39-40) (5401) by way of Rabi, who said, Ibn Wahb told us, with the same wording, and he mentioned it.Bayhaqi said following it, "This applies specifically to one who has not memorized the Quran. Thalaba bin Abu Malik did see the Prophet ﷺ, according to what the scholars of history have claimed."
