I heard Numan bin Bashir, while on the pulpit of Hims, say, "We stood in prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the month of Ramadan on the night of the twenty-third until the first third of the night had passed. Then we stood with him on the night of the twenty-fifth until midnight. Then we stood with him on the night of the twenty-seventh until we feared we would miss al-falah." They used to call the pre-dawn meal al-falah.
سمعت النعمان بن بشير على منبر حمص يقول: قمنا مع رسول الله ﷺ في شهر رمضان ليلة ثلاث وعشرين إلى ثلث الليل الأول، ثم قمنا معه ليلة خمس وعشرين إلى نصف الليل، ثم قمنا معه ليلة سبع وعشرين حتى ظننا أن لا ندرك الفلاح وكانوا يسمونه السحور.
Narrated by Nasai (1606) and Ahmad (18402), and Ibn Khuzayma (2204) and Hakim (1/440) graded it sahih, all of them from the hadith of Muawiya bin Salih, who said, Nuaym bin Ziyad Abu Talha related to me, and he mentioned it.Ahmad added at the end, "As for us, we say the seventh night is the night of the twenty-seventh, while you say the seventh night is the night of the twenty-third, so which of us is more correct, we or you?"Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Muawiya bin Salih Himsi, for he is hasan al-hadith. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the standard of Bukhari." Dhahabi responded to this by saying, "Muslim is the only one who used Muawiya as evidence, and the hadith is not up to the standard of either of them, but it is hasan."
