We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a military expedition during Ramadan. One of the Prophet's ﷺ companions was fasting and became severely weakened, and thirst nearly killed him. His she-camel began wandering beneath the thorny trees. The Prophet ﷺ was informed about him and said, "Bring him to me."When the man was brought, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Are you not in the path of Allah and in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Break your fast."So he broke his fast.
Ahmad (14529) and Abu Yaala (2252) both narrated it through the route of Rawh bin Ubada, who said, "Zakariya bin Ishaq narrated to us, Abu Zubayr narrated to us, that he heard Jabir bin Abdullah say," and then he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Abu Zubayr, for he is one whose hadith is hasan.Ahmad (14508) also narrated it through the route of Husayn bin Waqid, from Abu Zubayr, who said, "I heard Jabir say," and he mentioned the story in brief, ending with him saying, "Is it not enough for you to be in the path of Allah and with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that you must also fast?"
