Rafi reported that he passed by with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the year of the Conquest by a man who was being cupped at al-Baqi on the eighteenth of Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Both the cupper and the one being cupped have broken their fast."
أنه مر مع رسول الله ﷺ في زمن الفتح على رجل يحتجم بالبقيع لثمان عشر خلت من رمضان، فقال: أفطر الحاجم والمحجوم.
Reported by Abu Dawud (2369) and Ibn Majah (1681), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (3533), all of them through Abu Qilaba, from Abu Ashath, from Shaddad bin Aws, and he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.Tirmidhi mentioned in Ilal al-Kabir (1/362-364), quoting Bukhari as saying, "There is nothing in this subject more sahih than the hadith of Thawban and Shaddad bin Aws." I mentioned to him the apparent inconsistency, and he said, "Both of them are sahih in my view, for Abu Qilaba narrated both hadiths. He narrated one from Abu Asma, from Thawban, and he narrated the other from Abu Ashath, from Shaddad."Tirmidhi said, "They likewise mentioned that Ibn Madini said, 'The hadith of Thawban and the hadith of Shaddad are both sahih.'"
