The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The days of Tashriq are days of eating and drinking."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: أيام التشريق أيام أكل وشرب.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Fasting (1141) through the route of Khalid Haddan, from Abu Malih, from Nubaysha, and he mentioned it. In another narration he added, "and remembrance of Allah." Nubaysha, with a dammah on the nun and a fathah on the ba, is a diminutive form of Nubsha. He is a well known companion, Nubaysha bin Abdullah Hudhali, and the Prophet ﷺ named him Nubaysha the Good. The wording of this hadith indicates that fasting on these days is not forbidden in the way that fasting on the two Eid days is forbidden, since fasting on these days was not prohibited the way fasting on the two Eid days was prohibited. Abu Hanifa forbade fasting on them altogether, while Malik and Shafii, in the more well known of his two positions, permitted fasting on them for the one performing tamattu. The evidence for this will come in the chapter that follows.
