The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would break his fast with fresh dates before praying. If fresh dates were not available, he would break his fast with dried dates, and if those were not available, he would take a few sips of water.
كان رسول الله ﷺ يفطر على رطبات قبل أن يصلي، فإن لم تكن رطبات فعلى تمرات، فإن لم تكن حسا حسوات من ماء.
Abu Dawud (2356) narrated it, and from him Daraqutni (2278) narrated it from Imam Ahmad, and it is also found in his Musnad (12676). Tirmidhi (696), Daraqutni (2277), and Bayhaqi (4/239) narrated it through other routes as well, all of them from the hadith of Abdul-Razzaq, who said, "Jafar bin Sulayman narrated to us, Thabit Bunani narrated to us, that he heard Anas bin Malik," then he mentioned it.Tirmidhi said, "Hasan gharib."Daraqutni said, "This isnad is sahih."Hakim said (1/432), "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim. It has already been noted that it is a sahih corroborating witness for the hadith of Salman bin Amir."
