Someone said to Ayesha, "Mother of the Believers, the moon was sighted this month after only twenty-nine days!"She replied, "What surprises you about that? I fasted with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ twenty-nine days more often than I fasted thirty."
Imam Ahmad (24518) narrated it, as did Tabarani in Al-Awsat (5245), Daraqutni (2351), and Bayhaqi (4/250), all of them through routes from Ishaq bin Saeed bin Amr, from his father Saeed bin Amr bin Saeed bin As Umawi, from Ayesha, and he related it. Daraqutni said, "This chain is sahih hasan." I say, its chain is sahih and its narrators are the narrators of the two sahihs. As for what was narrated from Ibn Masud, who said, "We indeed fasted with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ twenty-nine days more often than we fasted thirty," this is not established, as Daraqutni said (2350), because it contains Abdul-Ala bin Abu Musawir, who narrates from Ibn Abu Sulayman, from Ibrahim, from Alqama, from him. "Abdullah bin Abu Musawir Hammad is discarded (matruk)," end of quote.I say, however, Abu Dawud (2322) and Tirmidhi (689) both narrated it from Ahmad bin Mani, who said, Yahya bin Zakariya bin Abu Zaida narrated to us, Isa bin Dinar informed me, from his father, from Amr bin Harith bin Abu Dirar, from Ibn Masud, and he related it. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (1922) and extracted it through this route. Imam Ahmad (4300) narrated it from Yahya bin Zakariya with a similar chain to this. Its narrators are trustworthy except for Dinar, the father of Isa, who is the Kufan. His son alone narrated from him, and no one deemed him reliable except Ibn Hibban (6/291). For this reason, Hafiz said of him, "Acceptable," meaning if corroborated, but he was not corroborated, so his hadith is weak (layyin al-hadith). Dhahabi said in his Mizan, "Unknown."
