Charity in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ consisted only of dates, Zabib, and barley. Wheat was not among them.
لم تكن الصدقة على عهد رسول الله ﷺ إلا التمر والزبيب والشعير، ولم تكن الحنطة.

Ibn Khuzayma (2406) narrated it from Muhammad bin Sufyan bin Abu Zinad Abli, who said, Abdullah bin Musa told us, Fudayl bin Ghazwan informed us, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and he related it. Its chain is sahih. In another narration, Ibn Umar said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give Zakat al-Fitr as a saa of dates or a saa of barley." He said, "And Abdullah bin Umar used to say, People made the equivalent of that two mudds of wheat." Ibn Khuzayma (2405) narrated it. In it is Fudayl bin Sulayman Numayri, of whom Ibn Main said, "He is not reliable," and Abu Zura said, "Weak in hadith," and Nasai said, "He is not strong."Likewise, what has been reported from Ibn Abbas is not sound. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to give the zakat of Ramadan, a saa of food, on behalf of the young and old, the free and the enslaved. Whoever gave sult, it was accepted from him." And I think he also said, "Whoever gave flour, it was accepted from him, and whoever gave sawiq, it was accepted from him." Ibn Khuzayma (2415) narrated it from Nasr bin Ali, who said, Abdul-Ala told us, Hisham told us, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it.Ibn Abu Hatim said in his Ilal (627), "I asked my father about a hadith narrated by Nasr bin Ali." My father said, "This is a munkar hadith." I say, perhaps the abnormality lies in the mention of flour and sawiq, for otherwise the men of the chain are all reliable. It has also been reported from him as a stopped report with the wording, "The charity of breaking the fast is a saa of food." Bayhaqi narrated it (4/167) and said, "This is what is sahih, as a stopped report."As for what has been reported from Ammar bin Saad, the caller to prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that "the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that the charity of breaking the fast be a saa of dates, or a saa of barley, or a saa of sult," this is a disconnected report. Ibn Majah (1830) narrated it from Hisham bin Ammar, who said, Abdul-Rahman Saad bin Ammar bin Muazzin told us, who said, Umar bin Hafs told us, from Ammar bin Saad, and he related it.Abdul-Rahman bin Saad bin Ammar bin Saad Qaraz, the caller to prayer of Madinah, is daif, and Ammar bin Saad is a successor who did not meet the Prophet ﷺ. Busiri identified these two flaws in it. As for what appears in some printed copies with the addition "from his father," this is a glaring error, so beware.
