I was with the Prophet ﷺ when Hasan bin Ali was beside him. The boy picked up a date from among the dates of Madinah, and the Prophet ﷺ snatched it from him and said, "Don't you know that charity is not lawful for us?"
كنت عند النبي ﷺ وعنده الحسن بن علي، فأخذ تمرة من تمر المدينة، فانتزعها منه وقال: أما علمت أنه لا تحل لنا الصدقة.
Imam Ahmad (19057), Tabarani (7/90), and Darimi (1643) all narrated it through the hadith of Zuhayr, from Abdullah bin Isa, from Isa, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Layla, from Abu Layla, who related it. The wording given here is that of Darimi, and both of their wordings are longer than this. Its isnad is sahih, and Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Layla al-Kufi is trustworthy. Haythami attributed it in al-Majmu (1/284) to Ahmad and Tabarani, and said, "Its narrators are trustworthy."
