We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, nine or eight or seven of us, when he said, "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?"We had only recently given our pledge, so we said, "We have already pledged allegiance to you, Messenger of Allah."Then he said again, "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?"We said, "We have already pledged allegiance to you, Messenger of Allah."Then he said once more, "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?"So we stretched out our hands and said, "We have already pledged allegiance to you, Messenger of Allah, so on what shall we pledge allegiance to you?"He said, "That you worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, observe the five daily prayers, obey," and he whispered a word quietly, "and that you ask people for nothing."I later saw that if the whip of one of those men fell from his hand, he would not ask anyone to hand it back to him.
Muslim reported it in the chapter on zakat (1043), through the route of Marwan bin Muhammad Dimashqi, who said, "Saeed narrated to us, from Rabia bin Yazid, from Abu Idris Khawlani, from Abu Muslim, from Awf bin Malik Ashjai," and he related the hadith.
