The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I tell you who has the best station among people?"We said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "A man holding the reins of his horse in the path of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, until he dies or is killed. Shall I tell you who comes next?"We said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "A man secluded in a mountain pass who establishes the prayer, pays the zakat, and keeps away from the evils of people. Shall I tell you who is the worst of people?"We said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "The one who is asked in the name of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, yet gives nothing for His sake."
Nasai (2569) narrated it from Muhammad bin Rafi, who said, Ibn Abu Fudayk narrated to us, who said, Ibn Abu Dhib informed us, from Saeed bin Khalid Qarizi, from Ismail bin Abdul-Rahman, from Ata bin Yasar, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it.This isnad is hasan because of the discussion surrounding Saeed bin Khalid Qarizi. Nasai declared him daif, while others accepted him, so his hadith is hasan. Ibn Hibban narrated it through this same route in his Sahih (604), as did Imam Ahmad (2116).Tirmidhi (1652) narrated it from Qutayba bin Saeed, from Ibn Lahia, from Bukayr bin Abdullah bin Ashaj, from Ata bin Yasar, with the same wording. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (605), and narrated it through another route from Bukayr as well.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith from this route, and this hadith is narrated through more than one route from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ."I say, it is as he said. But why did Tirmidhi turn away from this other route, when it is more sahih than the route he cited? The answer may be that he cited it through the route of Ibn Lahia because of the higher position of its isnad, and Allah knows best.
