Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, I heard so-and-so and so-and-so speaking well of you, mentioning that you gave each of them two Dinars."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "But by Allah, so-and-so is not like that. I gave him anywhere from ten to a hundred, yet he never says such a thing. By Allah, one of you walks away with what he begged from me tucked under his arm, and it is nothing but fire."Umar asked, "Messenger of Allah, then why do you give it to them?"He answered, "What can I do? They refuse anything else, and Allah refuses to let me be stingy."
قال عمر: يا رسول الله، لقد سمعت فلانا وفلانا يحسنان الثحدثناء يذكران أنك أعطيتهما دينارين قال: فقال النبي ﷺ: لكن والله فلانا ما هو كذلك، لقد أعطيته من عشرة إلى مائة فما يقول ذاك! أما والله إن أحدكم ليخرج مسألته من عندي يتأبطها- يعني تكون تحت إبطه- يعني نارا. قال: قال عمر: يا رسول الله لم تعطيها إياهم؟ قال: فما أصنع يأبون إلا ذاك ويأبى الله لي البخل.
Ahmad (11004) and Bazzar - Kashf Astar (925) - both narrated it from the hadith of Abu Bakr bin Ayyash, from Amash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Saeed, who mentioned it. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih and narrated it in his Sahih (3412, 3414), as did Hakim in Mustadrak (1/46), both by this route. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two sheikhs, though they did not narrate it with this wording."Haythami mentioned it in Majma (943) and said, Ahmad, Abu Yaala, and Bazzar narrated it similarly, and the men of Ahmad's narration are the men of sahih. Bazzar said, "It has been narrated from Umar through several routes. Abu Bakr narrated it this way, while Jareer narrated it from Amash, from Atiya, from Abu Saeed. It has also been narrated from Jabir, and from Salman bin Rabia, from Umar."This is as he said, for he himself narrated it (924), as did Abu Yaala (1327), through the route of Jareer, from Amash, from Atiya, from Abu Saeed Khudri, who said, Two men came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about the price of a camel, so he helped them with two dinars. They left his presence and met Umar, and they praised him and expressed gratitude for what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done for them. Umar then went in to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what they had said, so the Prophet ﷺ said, "But so-and-so, I gave him anywhere between ten and a hundred, and he did not say that. Indeed, one of them asks me and goes off with his request tucked under his arm, and it is nothing but fire." Umar said, "Do you give us something that is fire?" He said, "They insist on asking me, and Allah refuses to let me be stingy."Atiya is Ibn Saeed Awfi, who is described as making many errors, and perhaps one of his errors was placing this hadith within the musnad of Abu Saeed, when the correct attribution is that it belongs to the musnad of Umar bin Khattab, as mentioned before, except that he was corroborated in the substance of the hadith.
