The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who will commit to me one thing for which I will guarantee him Paradise?"I said, "I will."He said, "Do not ask people for anything."After that, whenever Thawban was riding and his whip fell, he would not ask anyone to hand it to him. He would dismount and pick it up himself.
قال رسول الله ﷺ: من يتقبل لي بواحدة أتقبل له بالجنة؟ قلت: أنا، قال: لا تسأل الناس شيئا. قال: فكان ثوبان يقع سوطه وهو راكب فلا يقول لأحد: ناولنيه حتى ينزل فيأخذه.
Reported by Abu Dawud (1643), Nasai (2591), and Ibn Majah (1837) (this is his wording), from the hadith of Ibn Abu Dhib, who said, Muhammad bin Qays told me, from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Muawiya, from Thawban, and he related the hadith.In the wording of Nasai, "Whoever guarantees me one thing will have Paradise."However, Abu Dawud also reported it through another route, from Shubah, from Aasim, from Abu Aliyah, from Thawban, with this wording, "Whoever guarantees me that he will not ask people for anything, I guarantee him Paradise." Thawban said, "I will." So he never asked anyone for anything.Its chain is sahih. Hakim graded it sahih (1/412), saying it meets the standard of Muslim.Abu Aliyah is Rafi (with the diminutive form) bin Mihran Riyahi, a trustworthy narrator, though he frequently transmitted with omitted links in the chain. However, he is corroborated by Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid, as mentioned above.
