The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give me a gift, and I would say, "Give it to someone needier than me." This continued until one time he gave me some wealth, and I said, "Give it to someone needier than me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Take it. Whatever comes to you of this wealth while you are not craving it nor asking for it, take it. But what does not come, do not let your soul chase after it."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1473), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (1045), both through Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar, from his father, who said, "I heard Umar bin Khattab," and he related it.
