His mother said to him, "Will you not go and ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as the people ask him?"So I set out to ask him, and I found him standing and delivering a sermon, saying, "Whoever seeks to refrain from begging, Allah will grant him that. Whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient. And whoever asks people while he possesses the equivalent of five ounces of silver has begged persistently."I said to myself, "His she-camel is worth more than five ounces, and his servant's she-camel is worth more than five ounces." So I went back without asking him.
أنه قالت له أمه: ألا تنطلق فتسأل رسول الله ﷺ الله كما يسأله الناس، فانطلقت أسأله فوجدته قائما يخطب وهو يقول: من استعف أعفه الله ومن استغنى أغناه الله، ومن سأل الناس وله عدل خمس أواق فقد سأل إلحافا. فقلت بيني وبين نفسي: لناقة له هي خير من خمس أواق، ولغلامه ناقة أخرى هي خير من خمس أواق، فرجعت ولم أسأله.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (17237) from Abu Bakr Hanafi, who said, Abdul-Hameed bin Jafar narrated to us, from his father, from a man of Mazina, and he related it.Its isnad is hasan because of what has been said about Abdul-Hameed bin Jafar. Although he is among the men of the Sahih, some scholars have made remarks about him, yet his hadith is hasan.Haythami said in Majma (3/95), "Ahmad narrated it, and its men are the men of the Sahih." I say, it is as he said, for its men are the men of Muslim except for Abu Bakr Hanafi, who is Abdul-Kabir bin Abdul-Majid bin Ubaydullah Basri, one of the men of the two Shaykhs.
