The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever begs while possessing the value of an ounce has begged insistently."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: من سأل وله قيمة أوقية، فقد ألحف.
Abu Dawud (1628) and Nasai (2599) both narrated it from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Rijal narrated to us, from Umara bin Ghaziya, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Saeed Khudri, from his father Abu Saeed, and he mentioned the hadith. The wording given here is that of Abu Dawud. In Abu Dawud's version it reads, "I said, 'My she-camel Yaqutah is worth more than an ounce.'" Hisham said, "more than forty dirhams," so I went back and did not ask him. Hisham added in his narration, "and an ounce in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was forty dirhams." Hisham here is Ibn Ammar, the teacher of Abu Dawud, whom Abu Dawud paired with Qutayba bin Saeed in one of his narrations from him.As for Nasai's version, it states, "My mother sent me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I came to him and sat down, and he turned to face me and said, 'Whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient. Whoever seeks chastity, Allah
will keep him chaste. Whoever seeks sufficiency, Allah
will make him sufficient. And whoever asks while he has the value of an ounce has been overly insistent.'"I said, "My she-camel Yaqutah is worth more than an ounce," so I went back and did not ask him.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Rijal. Ahmad and Daraqutni deemed him reliable, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat, and Abu Hatim said, "He is acceptable."From this same route, Ibn Khuzayma (2447), Ibn Hibban (3390), and Imam Ahmad (1104) all narrated it, each in an abridged form.
