Umar bin Khattab saw a silk garment being sold at the door of the mosque and said, "Messenger of Allah, you should buy this garment to wear on Fridays and when delegations come to visit you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Only those who have no share in the Hereafter wear this."Later, some such garments were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave one of them to Umar bin Khattab.Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, you have given this to me to wear, yet you said about the garment of Utarid what you said?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered, "I did not give it to you so that you would wear it."So Umar gave it to a polytheist brother of his in Mecca.
Malik reported it in the Book of Dress (18) from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and mentioned it. Bukhari reported it in the Book of Friday (886) from Abdullah bin Yusuf, and Muslim in the Book of Dress (2068) from Yahya bin Yahya, both of them from Malik. In another version of Bukhari, in the Book of Gifts (2619), by way of Abdullah bin Dinar, from Ibn Umar, similarly, with the addition, "sell it or give it to someone to wear."
