My mother came to visit me while she was still a polytheist, during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I sought guidance from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying, "She has come hoping for my kindness. Should I maintain ties with my mother?"He replied, "Yes, maintain ties with your mother."In another narration, this occurred during the period of the treaty between Quraysh and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on gifts (2620), and Muslim in the chapter on zakat (1003), both from the hadith of Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Asma, and so he related it. The second narration is found in Bukhari (3183).Her saying, "My mother came to me while she was a polytheist" it is said that her name was Qutayla bint Abd Uzza, Quryashiya, Aamiriya. Her saying, "desiring," appears in Sahih Muslim as "desiring or fearful," and in Sunan Abu Dawud (1668) as "compelled," with a meem instead of a ba. The apparent meaning is that she desired her daughter's kindness and good treatment toward her, while fearing that she would be turned away without charity because of the difference in their religions. Whoever interprets it as meaning she desired Islam is mistaken, because if she had desired Islam, Asma would not have needed to seek a ruling on the matter, and if she had entered Islam her name would have been mentioned among the companions, but it was not mentioned. For this reason, most scholars said that she died a polytheist. Her saying, "with her son," it is said that he was Harith bin Mudrik bin Ubayd al-Makhzumi. Ibn Hajar said, "I have not seen any mention of him among the companions, so it seems he died a polytheist." He also said, "Some of our teachers mentioned that in some manuscripts it appears as 'with her father,' which is a scribal error." End of quote. His saying, "during the time of Quraysh," he meant by that the period between Hudaybiya and the conquest of Makkah.
