Zaynab said, "I was in the mosque when I saw the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, 'Give in charity, even from your jewelry.'"Zaynab used to support Abdullah and some orphans under her care. She said to Abdullah, "Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whether it would suffice for me as charity to spend on you and on the orphans under my care."Abdullah replied, "You ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ yourself."So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and found a woman from the Ansar at the door with the same question as mine. Bilal passed by us, and we said to him, "Ask the Prophet ﷺ whether it suffices for me as charity to spend on my husband and on orphans under my care." We added, "Do not tell him who we are."Bilal went in and asked him.The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Who are they?"Bilal said, "Zaynab."He asked, "Which Zaynab?"Bilal replied, "The wife of Abdullah."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes, she will have two rewards, the reward of kinship and the reward of charity."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1466), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (46/1000), both through the route of Umar bin Hafs, "My father narrated to us, Amash narrated to us," he said, "Shaqiq narrated to me, from Amr bin Harith, from Zaynab," and he related it. He said, "I mentioned it to Ibrahim, so Ibrahim narrated to me, from Abu Ubayda, from Amr bin Harith," with his chain of transmission. Ibrahim here is Ibn Yazid Nakhai, and Abu Ubayda here is the son of Abdullah bin Masud.Nawawi said in his commentary on Muslim, "The one who said, 'I mentioned it to Ibrahim,' is Amash, and what he meant is that he narrated it from two teachers, Shaqiq (Abu Waail) and Abu Ubayda." End of quote.I say, this is a mistake on his part, may Allah have mercy on him, for the two teachers of Amash are Shaqiq Abu Waail and Ibrahim bin Yazid Nakhai, and Ibrahim Nakhai narrates from Abu Ubayda, as is explicitly stated in the chain of transmission itself. So Abu Ubayda is the teacher of Amash's teacher, not the teacher of Amash himself, since he never met him.In Sunan Ibn Majah (1835), it says, "Zaynab was skilled with her hands," meaning she made things with her hands and earned a living from it. The orphans referred to are the sons of her brother.
