The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Son of Adam, giving away your surplus is better for you, and holding it back is worse for you. You will not be blamed for keeping only what is sufficient. Begin with those whom you support, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: يا ابن آدم، إنك أن تبدل الفضل خير لك، وأن نمسكه شر لك، ولا تلام على كفاف، وابدأ بمن تعول، واليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى.
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on zakat (1036) via Umar bin Yunus, who said, Ikrima bin Ammar narrated to us, who said, Shaddad narrated to us, who said, "I heard Abu Umama," and then he related the hadith.
