The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered the Ansar and asked, "Is there anyone among you who is not from you?"They replied, "No, except for a nephew of ours."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The nephew of a people is considered one of them."Then he said, "Quraysh are recent in their departure from the days of ignorance, and they have just suffered a calamity. I wanted to console them and win their hearts. Are you not pleased that the people return with worldly gains while you return with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to your homes? If the people were to travel through one valley and the Ansar through another, I would travel through the valley of the Ansar."
جمع رسول الله ﷺ الأنصار فقال: أفيكم أحد من غيركم. فقالوا: لا إلا ابن أخت لنا. فقال رسول الله ﷺ: إن ابن أخت القوم منهم. فقال: إن قريشا حديث عهد بجاهلية ومصيبة وإني أردت أن أجبرهم وأتألفهم، أما ترضون أن يرجع الناس بالدنيا وترجعون برسول الله ﷺ إلى بيوتكم، لو سلك الناس واديا وسلك الأنصار شعبا لسلكت شعب الأنصار.
Muslim narrated it in zakat (1059: 133) from Muhammad bin Muthanna and Ibn Bashar. Ibn Muthanna said, Muhammad bin Jafar (Ghundar) narrated to us, Shuba informed us, he said, I heard Qatada narrating from Anas bin Malik, and he mentioned it.Bukhari narrated it in the campaigns (4334) from Muhammad bin Bashshar, with a similar wording, in abbreviated form. He also narrated it in other places with another chain, similar to Muslim's narration.
