Some men from the Ansar said about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when Allah had granted His Messenger ﷺ the spoils from the wealth of Hawazin and he began giving men from Quraysh a hundred camels each, "May Allah forgive the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gives to Quraysh and leaves us out, while our swords still drip with their blood!"Anas said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of what they had said, so he sent for the Ansar and gathered them in a tent of leather, allowing no one else to be present with them. When they had assembled, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them and asked, "What is this talk of yours that has reached me?"Their learned men replied, "As for our men of sound judgment, Messenger of Allah, they said nothing. But some young men among us said, 'May Allah forgive the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gives to Quraysh and leaves out the Ansar, while our swords still drip with their blood.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I give to men who have only recently left disbelief behind. Are you not pleased that the people should depart with wealth while you return to your homes with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? By Allah, what you return with is better than what they return with."They said, "Indeed, Messenger of Allah, we are content."He then said to them, "After me you will see severe favoritism shown to others, so be patient until you meet Allah and His Messenger ﷺ at the Pool."Anas said, But we did not show patience.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on the obligation of khumus (3147), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (1059), both of them by way of Zuhri, from Anas, as he related it, and the wording given is that of Bukhari. The wording of Muslim is similar, except that after his saying ﷺ, "So be patient until you meet Allah the Exalted and His Messenger ﷺ at the Pool," he said, they said, "We will be patient." He did not say, Anas said, "But we were not patient."
