The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave gifts to a group of men while I was sitting among them. He left out one man and gave him nothing, though he was the most impressive of them in my eyes. So I stood up, went over to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and spoke to him privately.I said, "What is the matter with you regarding so-and-so? By Allah, I consider him a believer."He said, "Or a Muslim."I remained silent for a little while, then what I knew about the man overcame me, so I said again, "Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with you regarding so-and-so? By Allah, I consider him a believer."He said, "Or a Muslim."I remained silent for a little while, then what I knew about the man overcame me again, so I said, "Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with you regarding so-and-so? By Allah, I consider him a believer."He said, "Or a Muslim."Then he said, "I sometimes give to a man while another whom I have not given is dearer to me than him, out of fear that he might be cast into the Fire on his face."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1478), and Muslim in the Book of Iman (150), both through the route of Yaqub bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Salih bin Kaysan, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Amir bin Saad informed me, from his father Saad bin Abu Waqqas, and he related it.In another narration in both of their collections, from Salih, from Ismail bin Muhammad, who said, I heard my father narrating this hadith, and he said in his narration, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck him with his hand, gathering together the base of his neck and his shoulder, then said, 'Pay attention, Saad. I give a man...'"
