A man from Banu Tamim came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I am a man of much wealth, with family, children, and guests. Tell me how I should spend and how I should act."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Pay the zakat from your wealth, for it is a purification that purifies you. Maintain ties with your relatives, and recognize the right of the beggar, the neighbor, and the poor."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, lessen it for me."He said, "Then give the relative his due, and the poor, and the wayfarer, and do not squander wastefully."The man asked, "Is that enough for me, Messenger of Allah? If I bring the zakat to your messenger, am I then absolved of it before Allah and His Messenger?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Yes. Once you have delivered it to my messenger, you are absolved of it. Its reward is yours, and its sin is upon whoever alters it."
Imam Ahmad narrated it (12394) from Hashim bin Qasim, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Khalid bin Yazid, from Saeed bin Abu Hilal, from Anas bin Malik, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Saeed bin Abu Hilal. Although he is among the narrators of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), there has been disagreement about him. The majority considered him reliable, while Imam Ahmad said, "He mixes up hadiths," and Ibn Hazm judged him daif.I say, this applies when he contradicts the reliable narrators. But when he does not contradict them, he is as the majority said, reliable. However, this is complicated by what is said, that his narration from Anas is a mursal report. This is what Mizzi stated in Tahzib Kamal, despite the possibility that he met him, for he was born in Egypt in the year 70 AH, then came to Madinah and grew up there, while Anas died in the year 94 AH. Moreover, Mizzi did not attribute this statement to anyone, even though Abu Hatim explicitly stated that he did not meet Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman. Likewise, Tirmidhi and others explicitly stated that his narration from Jabir is mursal, but they did not state that his narration from Anas is mursal as well.Hakim graded it sahih (2/360-361), according to the criterion of the two Shaykhs.
