The poor came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "The wealthy people have taken away the high ranks and lasting bliss. They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, but they have surplus wealth with which they perform Hajj and Umrah, wage jihad, and give in charity."He said, "Shall I not tell you of something by which, if you take it up, you will catch up with those who have surpassed you and none after you will overtake you, and you will be the best among those you live alongside except for one who does the same? Glorify Allah, praise Him, and proclaim His greatness thirty-three times after every prayer."We then differed among ourselves. Some of us said, "We will say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, al-Hamdu lillah thirty-three times, and Allahu akbar thirty-four times."So I went back to him, and he said, "Say Subhan Allah, al-Hamdu lillah, and Allahu akbar until each of them reaches thirty-three."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Prayer (843), and Muslim in the Book of Prayer (595), both from the hadith of Mutamir, from Ubaydullah, from Sumayy, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, as mentioned. The wording is Bukhari's. In Muslim's version it reads, "The poor among the migrants came to the Prophet ﷺ and said" the hadith.Abu Salih said, the poor among the migrants then returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Our brothers, the wealthy ones, heard what we had done and did the same." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That is the bounty of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills."
