The Prophet ﷺ said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand. Begin with those you are responsible for. The best charity is what is given out of surplus. Whoever seeks chastity, Allah will keep him chaste, and whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: اليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى، وابدأ بمن تعول وخير الصدقة عن ظهر غنى ومن يستعفف يعفه الله ومن يستغن يغنه الله.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1427), from Musa bin Ismail, who said, Wahib told us, Hisham told us, from his father, from Hakeem bin Hizam, and he related it.Muslim narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1034) through another route, but he did not mention in it, "Whoever seeks to be self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient, and whoever seeks independence, Allah will make him independent."
