The Prophet ﷺ said, "A time will come when a man will go around offering charity in gold, yet find no one to accept it from him. A single man will be followed by forty women seeking his protection, due to the scarcity of men and the abundance of women."
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on zakat (1414), and Muslim in the chapter on zakat (1012), both from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ala Abu Kurayb (Muslim added Abdullah bin Barrad Ashari), who both said, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Buraid, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa, and he mentioned the hadith. His saying, "and a single man will be seen followed by forty women," refers to the destruction of men due to the abundance of wars and fighting, to the point that in a village or tribe there might remain only one man to attend to their needs. His saying, "yaludhna" (take refuge) with him means they attach themselves to him so that he may look after their affairs and defend them, so that no one would have designs on them because of his authority over them.
