The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in upon Bilal and found a heap of dates beside him. He asked, "What is this, Bilal?"Bilal replied, "Dates I have stored away."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you not fear, Bilal, that this will give off smoke for you in the fire of Hell? Spend, Bilal, and do not fear that the Owner of the Throne will reduce you to poverty."
Bayhaqi related it in Shuab (1283) from Abu Abdullah (that is, Hakim), who said, Abu Jafar Muhammad bin Salih bin Hani informed us, Sari bin Khuzayma related to us, Uthman bin Haytham told us, Awf (that is, Ibn Abu Jamila) told us, from Muhammad (that is, Ibn Sirin), from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Sari bin Khuzayma Abiwardi, whom Ibn Hibban mentioned in Thiqat, saying, "His hadith is upright." Hakim's teacher, Abu Jafar Muhammad bin Salih bin Hani, is trustworthy and reliable, as Samani mentioned in Ansab and Ibn Kathir in Bidayah wan-Nihayah, except that in the printed edition it appears as "Muhammad bin Salih bin Yazid," which is a distortion, and the correct form is "Muhammad bin Salih bin Hani."
