Abu Dharr said, I was walking with the Prophet ﷺ in the lava plain of Madinah one evening, and we were looking toward Mount Uhud. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Abu Dharr."I replied, "At your service, Messenger of Allah."He said, "It would not please me to have gold the size of Uhud, and for three nights to pass with even a single Dinar of it still in my possession, except a Dinar I set aside to repay a debt. I would rather distribute it among the servants of Allah, like this," and he gestured with his hands in front of him, "and like this," to his right, "and like this," to his left.Then we walked on, and he said, "Abu Dharr."I replied, "At your service, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Those who have the most will be those who have the least on the Day of Resurrection, except for one who says like this, and like this, and like this," gesturing as he had done the first time.Then I walked on with him, and he said, "Abu Dharr, stay where you are until I come back to you."He went off until he disappeared from my sight. I heard a clamor, and I heard a voice. I said to myself, "Perhaps something has happened to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."I was about to follow him, then I remembered his words, "Do not move until I come back to you," so I waited for him. When he returned, I told him what I had heard.He said, "That was Jibreel. He came to me and said, 'Whoever from your community dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise.'"I asked, "Even if he commits adultery and even if he steals?"He replied, "Even if he commits adultery and even if he steals."
كنت أمشي مع النبي ﷺ في حرة المدينة عشاء ونحن تنظر إلى أحد فقال لي رسول الله ﷺ: يا أبا ذر، قال قلت: لييك يا رسول الله، قال: ما أحب أن أحدا ذاك عندي ذهب أمسى ثالثة عندي منه دينار إلا دينارا أرصده لدين إلا أن أقول به في عباد الله هكذا- حثا بين يديه- وهكذا عن يمينه وهكذا عن شماله. قال: ثم مشينا، فقال: يا أبا ذر، قال قلت: لبيك يا رسول الله، قال: إن الأكثرين هم الأقلون يوم القيامة إلا من قال هكذا وهكذا وهكذا- مثل ما صنع في المرة الأولى- قال: ثم مشيت. قال: يا أبا ذر، كما أنت حتى آتيك. قال: فانطلق حتى توارى عني. قال: سمعت لغطا، وسمعت صوتا. قال: فقلت: لعل رسول الله ﷺ عرض له؟ قال: فهممت أن أتبعه قال: ثم ذكرت قوله: لا تبرح حتى آتيك قال: فانتظرته فلما جاء ذكرت له الذي سمعت. قال: فقال: ذاك جبريل أتاني فقال: من مات من أمتك لا يشرك بالله شيئا دخل الجنة. قال: قلت: وإن زنى وإن سرق؟ قال: وإن زنى وإن سرق.
Narrated by Bukhari in the Book of Borrowing (2388), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (994:32), both from Amash, from Zayd bin Wahb, from Abu Dharr, and he mentioned it.In another narration reported by Muslim through a different chain, from Abu Dharr, who said, "I went out one night, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ walking alone, with no one accompanying him. I thought he disliked having anyone walk with him. So I began walking in the shadow of the moon. He turned and saw me and said, 'Who is this?' I said, 'Abu Dharr, may Allah make me your ransom.' He said, 'Abu Dharr, come along.'I walked with him for a while, and he said, 'Those who have much wealth will have little reward on the Day of Resurrection, except one to whom Allah has given wealth and who spends it generously to his right and to his left, in front of him and behind him, and does good with it.'I walked with him for a while longer, and he said, 'Sit here.' He made me sit in a hollow surrounded by stones, and said to me, 'Sit here until I return to you.' Then he went off into the lava field until I could no longer see him. He stayed away from me for a long time, and then I heard him coming back, saying, 'Even if he steals, and even if he commits adultery.'When he came, I could not restrain myself, and I said, 'Prophet of Allah, may Allah make me your ransom, who was it speaking with you over there in the lava field? I did not hear anyone answer you.' He said, 'That was Jibreel, who appeared to me at the edge of the lava field and said, "Give your ummah the good news that whoever dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise." I said, "Jibreel, even if he steals and even if he commits adultery?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Even if he steals and even if he commits adultery?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Even if he steals and even if he commits adultery?" He said, "Yes, and even if he drinks wine."'"
