Umar bin Khattab appointed me to collect the zakat. When I had finished and delivered it to him, he ordered that I be given a payment for my work.I said, "I worked only for Allah, and my reward is with Allah."He replied, "Take what you are given. I myself worked in this capacity during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he assigned me a payment. I said to him what you have just said to me, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me, 'When you are given something without asking for it, eat from it and give in charity.'"
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1045:112) from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Bukayr, from Busr bin Saeed, from Ibn Saadi Maliki, and he related it.Ibn Khuzayma narrated it in his Sahih (2364) and said, "Ibn Saadi Maliki, I think he is Abdullah bin Saad bin Abu Sarh." And it is as he said, and Bukhari likewise identified him in the following narration, where he narrated it in the Book of Rulings (7163) from Abu Yaman, who said, Shuayb informed us, from Zuhri, who said, Saaib bin Yazid, the son of Namir's sister, informed me, that Huwaytib bin Abdul-Uzza informed him, that Abdullah bin Saadi informed him that he came to Umar during his caliphate, and Umar said to him,"Have I not been told that you take charge of some of the people's affairs, but when you are given the compensation for the work, you dislike it?" I said, "Yes."Umar said, "Then what do you want to do about that?" I said, "I have horses and servants and I am well off, and I want my compensation to be a charity for the Muslims."Umar said, "Do not do that, for I once wanted the same thing you want now. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give me gifts, and I would say, 'Give it to someone more in need of it than me.' Once he gave me some wealth, and I said, 'Give it to someone more in need of it than me.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Take it and keep it as your own wealth, then give it in charity. Whatever comes to you of this wealth while you are not seeking it out or asking for it, take it, but otherwise do not chase after it with your own desire.'"
