I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "Whoever works for us should acquire a wife. If he has no servant, let him acquire a servant. If he has no dwelling, let him acquire a dwelling."
سمعت النبي ﷺ يقول: من كان لنا عاملا فليكتسب زوجة، فإن لم يكن له خادم فليكتسب خادما، فإن لم يكن له مسكن فليكتسب مسكنا.
Abu Dawud (2945) narrated it from Musa bin Marwan Raqqi, who said, "Muafa told us, Uzai told us, from Harith bin Yazid, from Jubayr bin Nufayr, from Mustawrid bin Shaddad," who said, then he related it.Abu Dawud said, Abu Bakr (meaning Muafa, as stated in Sahih Ibn Khuzayma) said, "I was informed that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever takes something other than that has committed misappropriation or theft.'" Ibn Khuzayma (2370) and Hakim (1/406) both graded it sahih, both through the route of Muafa, with the same chain, except that they both said "Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr," and Hakim added his lineage back to his grandfather Nufayr. He said, "It meets the criteria of Bukhari and Muslim."This is how it appears in most sources. Jubayr bin Nufayr also narrated from Mustawrid, as noted in Mizzi's Tahdhib, which points out the disagreement over this. Both men are trustworthy, so this discrepancy causes no harm.Muafa is Ibn Imran Mawsili, as Ibn Khuzayma identified his lineage. Muafa is the author of the book Zuhd, though I have not been able to locate it.The hadith has another chain of transmission. Imam Ahmad (18015, 18017, 18019) narrated it through several routes from Ibn Lahia, from Abdullah bin Hubayra and Harith bin Yazid, from Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr, who said, "I heard Mustawrid bin Shaddad say, 'I heard the Prophet ﷺ say,'" and he then related the hadith with similar wording. He added to it, "Or a mount, then let him take a mount. Whoever obtains anything besides that has committed misappropriation or theft."There is well-known criticism of Ibn Lahia, but he has been corroborated, as mentioned above, except regarding this addition, for I have not found anyone who corroborated him on it, except through a disconnected route, as mentioned before.Abu Hatim Razi criticized the entire hadith of Ibn Lahia, as noted in Ilal by his son (636), with a criticism that is not damaging.
