I used to translate between Ibn Abbas and the people when a woman came to him asking about an earthen jar used for soaking dates. He said that a delegation from Abdul-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Who is the delegation?" or "Who are the people?"They replied, "Rabia."He said, "Welcome to the people," or "to the delegation, neither disgraced nor regretful."They said, "Messenger of Allah, we come to you from a distant land, and between us and you lies this tribe of the disbelievers of Mudar. We cannot reach you except during the sacred month. So instruct us with a decisive command that we may convey to those we left behind, by which we shall enter Paradise."So he commanded them with four things and forbade them from four things. He commanded them to believe in Allah alone, then asked, "Do you know what belief in Allah means?"They replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "To bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the zakat, to fast Ramadan, and to give a fifth of the spoils of war." And he forbade them from the dubba, the hantam, and the muzaffat.Shuba said, "And sometimes he said naqir."Shuba also said, "And sometimes he said muqayyar."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Memorize this and convey it to those you left behind."Abu Bakr in his narration said, "to those behind you," and his version did not include muqayyar.
Narrated by Bukhari in the Book of Zakat (1398), and in the Book of Battles (4368), and by Muslim in the Book of Faith (17:24), both through Abu Jamra, transmitting from him, and he related it. The wording is Muslim's, and Bukhari's wording is similar. In another version reported by Bukhari, Abu Jamra said, I said to Ibn Abbas , "I have a jar in which nabidh is soaked for me, and I drink it while it is sweet, from a jar. If I drink too much of it and sit with people, and my sitting lasts too long, I fear I might be disgraced." He said, "The delegation of Abdul-Qays came" (and he related it).
