Bishr asked Jabir bin Abdullah about the questioners of the grave, and he said, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, 'This community will be tested in their graves. When the believer is placed in his grave and his companions turn away from him, an angel of severe rebuke comes to him and asks, "What did you used to say about this man?"The believer answers, "I say that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and His servant."The angel then says to him, "Look at your seat in the Fire. Allah has saved you from it and exchanged it for the seat in Paradise that you now see." So he sees both of them. The believer says, "Let me go and give the good news to my family."He is told, "Stay where you are."As for the hypocrite, he sits up when his family has turned away from him, and he is asked, "What did you used to say about this man?"He answers, "I do not know. I used to say what the people said."He is told, "May you never know. This was your seat in Paradise, and it has been exchanged for your seat in the Fire."'"Jabir said, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, 'Every servant will be raised in the grave in the state in which he died, the believer upon his faith and the hypocrite upon his hypocrisy.'"
Abdul-Razzaq (6744, 6746) narrated it from Ibn Jurayj, who said, "Abu Zubayr informed me that he heard Jabir bin Abdullah say," and then he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.Ahmad (14722), Tabarani in Awsat (9072), and Bayhaqi in Ithbat Azab Qabr (239) all narrated it via Ibn Lahia, from Abu Zubayr, that he asked Jabir, and then he related it, with the wording belonging to Ahmad. Ibn Lahia is subject to well-known criticism, but he has been corroborated.
