I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "No Muslim dies on the night of Friday except that he is spared from the trial of the grave."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: ما من مسلم يموت في ليلة الجمعة الأ برئ من فتنة القبر.
Ahmad (7050) narrated it from Ibrahim bin Abu Abbas, who said, Baqiyyah narrated to us, Muawiya bin Saeed Tujibi narrated to me, I heard Abu Qabil Misri say, I heard Abdullah bin Amr bin As, and he mentioned the hadith. In this chain, Baqiyyah explicitly states that he heard the hadith directly, just as he explicitly states hearing it throughout the rest of the chain, so the suspicion of tadlis is removed from him. This is a hasan chain, for Abu Qabil Misri is Huyayy bin Hani, about whom Ahmad, Ibn Main, and Abu Zura said, "Trustworthy," while Abu Hatim said, "Salih al-hadith."Imam Ahmad also narrated it (6646) from Siraj, who said, Baqiyyah narrated to us, from Muawiya bin Saeed, from Abu Qabil, from Abdullah bin Amr, and he mentioned the hadith.Bayhaqi narrated it in Ithbat Azab Qabr (172) through the route of Layth bin Saad, who said, Khalid bin Yazid narrated to me, from Saeed bin Abu Hilal, from Rabia bin Sayf, that Abu Abdul-Rahman Hubli informed him that a son of Iyad bin Uqbah died on a Friday, and his grief over him intensified, so a man from Sadaf said to him, "O Abu Yahya, shall I not give you glad tidings of something I heard from Abdullah bin Amr bin As?" and he mentioned it. The man from Sadaf is Sinan bin Abdul-Rahman Sadafi, as appears in another narration in the same source (174) through the route of Ibn Wahb, who said, Ibn Lahia informed me, from Sinan bin Abdul-Rahman Sadafi, that Abdullah bin Amr bin As used to say, "Whoever dies on Friday or on the night of Friday is protected from the trial of the grave," except that he did not attribute it to the Prophet directly, though its ruling is that of a marfu report, since it concerns matters of the unseen. Ibn Wahb's hearing from Ibn Lahia was before his confusion set in.As for what Tirmidhi narrated (1074) from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi and Abu Amir Aqadi narrated to us, they said, Hisham bin Saad narrated to us, from Saeed bin Abu Hilal, from Rabia bin Sayf, from Abdullah bin Amr, attributed to the Prophet, "There is no Muslim who dies on Friday or on the night of Friday but Allah protects him from the trial of the grave," this contains a break in the chain, for Rabia bin Sayf did not hear from Abdullah bin Amr. Tirmidhi himself confirmed this, saying, "Hasan gharib," and he said, "This hadith's chain is not connected, for Rabia bin Sayf only narrates from Abu Abdul-Rahman Hubli, from Abdullah bin Amr, and we do not know of Rabia hearing directly from Abdullah bin Amr." This is how it appears in the Fuad Abdul-Baqi edition, while in another edition he said only "Gharib," which is correct, since hasan and disconnection cannot coexist. The hadith is hasan through other routes, as mentioned in the Book of Friday, in chapter ten.On this subject there are two daif hadiths. The first is the hadith of Anas bin Malik, narrated by Abu Yaala in his Musnad (4099), whose chain contains Yazid Raqashi, who is daif. The second is the hadith of Jabir bin Abdullah, extracted by Abu Naeem in Hilyah (3/155), which contains Umar bin Musa, who is "dhahib al-hadith." Abu Naeem said, "Gharib from the hadith of Jabir, Umar bin Musa is alone in narrating it, and he is a Madinan in whom there is looseness." For more, see the Book of Friday.
