Bishr asked Jabir bin Abdullah about the questioners of the grave, and Jabir said, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, 'This nation will be tested in their graves. When the believer is placed in his grave and his companions turn away from him, an angel of severe rebuke comes to him and asks, "What did you used to say about this man?" The believer replies, "I say that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and His servant." The angel then says to him, "Look at your seat that was prepared for you in the Fire. Allah has saved you from it and replaced it with the seat you now see in Paradise." He sees them both. The believer then says, "Let me go and give the good news to my family," but he is told, "Stay where you are."As for the hypocrite, when his family turns away from him, he is made to sit up and is asked, "What did you used to say about this man?" He replies, "I do not know. I used to say what the people said." He is told, "You did not know. This was your seat in Paradise, but it has been exchanged for your seat in the Fire."'"Jabir said, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, 'Every servant will be raised in the grave in the state in which he died, the believer upon his faith and the hypocrite upon his hypocrisy.'"
Abdul-Razzaq narrated it (6744, 6746) from Ibn Jurayj, who said, "Abu Zubayr informed me that he heard Jabir bin Abdullah say," and then he related it. Its isnad is sahih.Imam Ahmad (14722) and Tabarani in Awsat (9072) both narrated it through Ibn Lahia, from Abu Zubayr, that he asked Jabir bin Abdullah, the wording being Imam Ahmad's. There is well-known criticism of Ibn Lahia, but he was corroborated in the first isnad. As for what has been reported from Abdullah bin Amr that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned the two testers of the graves, and Umar said, "Will our minds be restored to us, O Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Yes, just as you are today." Umar exclaimed, "A stone in his mouth!" This report is daif. Imam Ahmad narrated it (6603) from Hasan (Ibn Musa Ashyab), who said, Ibn Lahia narrated to us, Huyayy bin Abdullah narrated to me, that Abu Abdul-Rahman told him, from Abdullah bin Amr, and he related it.There is well-known criticism of Ibn Lahia, but Ibn Hibban narrated it in his Sahih (3115) through Ibn Wahb, who said, Huyayy bin Abdullah narrated to me with his isnad, and he related it. As for Huyayy bin Abdullah Maafiri, Ahmad said of him, "His hadiths are objectionable." Bukhari said, "There is something questionable about him." Nasai said, "He is not strong." Aqeeli, Ibn Jawzi, and others mentioned him among the daif narrators. Ibn Hibban was lenient with him, including him among "the trustworthy" and narrating from him in his Sahih, perhaps relying on Ibn Main's statement, "There is no harm in him," without regard to the statements of the earlier scholars just mentioned.Likewise, Haythami said in Majma (3/47), "Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it in Kabir, and the narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih." But this is not as he said, because Ibn Lahia and Huyayy bin Abdullah are not among the narrators of the Sahih. The two testers are the two angels who question the deceased. The story of the two testers of the grave was narrated by Hafiz Bayhaqi in Ithbat Azab Qabr (116) through several isnads, and here I present them along with commentary on them.Bayhaqi, may Allah have mercy on him, said, Muhammad bin Abdullah Hafiz and Muhammad bin Musa bin Fadl informed me, both saying, Abu Abbas Muhammad bin Yaqub narrated to us, Muhammad bin Ishaq Saghani narrated to us, Mansur bin Abu Mizham narrated to us, Ibrahim bin Saad narrated to us, from his father, from Ata bin Yasar, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Umar bin Khattab , "O Umar, how will it be with you when three cubits and a span of earth, a cubit and a span in width, have been prepared for you, then your family comes to you and washes you, shrouds you, and embalms you, then carries you until they conceal you in the earth, then heaps the soil over you, then leaves you? Then the two testers of the grave, Munkar and Nakir, come to you. Their voices are like crashing thunder, and their eyes are like flashing lightning. They have let down their hair, and they shake you violently and terrify you, and they say, 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion?'" He said, "O Prophet of Allah, will the mind I have today remain with me?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then I will manage them with the help of Allah, Most High."I say, this is mursal. He, may Allah have mercy on him, also said, Muhammad bin Abdullah and Muhammad bin Musa informed us, both saying, Abu Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated to us, Muhammad bin Umar narrated to us, Abdullah bin Fudayl bin Abu Abdullah narrated to us, from his father, from Abu Ghatfan, from Ibn Abbas, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "How will you be, O Umar, when you are brought down into the earth and three cubits and a span have been dug for you, then Munkar and Nakir come to you, two black beings dragging their hair, their voices like crashing thunder and their eyes like flashing lightning, digging the earth with their fangs, and they sit you up in terror, shaking you violently and terrifying you?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah, will I be in that state as I am now?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then I will manage them by Allah's permission, O Messenger of Allah."I say, it contains Muhammad bin Umar, who is Waqidi, and he is rejected as a narrator. He, may Allah have mercy on him, also said, Abu Abdullah Hafiz informed us in Tarikh, Sulayman bin Muhammad bin Najiyah informed me, Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Rahawayh narrated to us, Ali bin Abdullah Madini narrated to us, Mufaddal bin Salih narrated to us, from Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Abu Suhayl, from his father, from Umar bin Khattab ﷺ, who said, "O Umar, how will you be when you are within four spans of earth, in two cubits, and you see Munkar and Nakir?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah, what are Munkar and Nakir?" He said, "The two testers of the grave. Their eyes are like flashing lightning and their voices are like crashing thunder. They have with them a mace that if the people of Mina gathered to lift it they could not, yet it is lighter for them than this staff of mine. They will test you, and if you falter or waver, they will strike you with it a blow that turns you to ashes." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, will I be in this same state I am in now?" He said, "Yes." He said, "I hope I will manage them."I say, he said in Itiqad (p. 223), "This is a solitary narration through this isnad, narrated only by this Mufaddal. We have narrated it through another route from Ibn Abbas, and through another sahih route, from Ata bin Yasar, from the Prophet ﷺ as a mursal narration in the story of Umar, in which he said, 'three cubits, a cubit and a span in width,' without mentioning the mace." End of quote.I say, Mufaddal bin Salih, Abu Jamilah Kufi Nakhkhas (with a nun and kha), Bukhari and others said of him, "His hadith is objectionable." Dhahabi mentioned this hadith of his in Mizan (4/168) through another route from Mufaddal bin Salih, [who said], Ismail bin Abu Khalid narrated to us, from Abu Shamr, from Umar, and he related it. He said, "Abu Shahm," and it is also said "Abu Shamr" - there is obscurity regarding him.And he said in the biography of "Abu Shahr," from Umar, and Ibn Abu Khalid narrated from him an objectionable report about Munkar and Nakir, mentioned under Mufaddal bin Salih, "He is not known. It is said his name is a misspelling of Abu Shahm, and it is said Abu Shamr, and it is said Abu Suhayl." End (4/537).
