The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the deceased is buried (or he said, when one of you is buried), two black and blue angels come to him. One is called Munkar and the other Nakir. They ask him, 'What did you used to say about this man?'He answers as he used to say, 'He is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.'They say, 'We already knew that you would say this.'Then his grave is expanded for him to seventy cubits by seventy, and it is filled with light for him. Then he is told, 'Sleep.'He says, 'May I return to my family and tell them?'They say, 'Sleep like the sleep of a bridegroom whom none but the dearest of his family would wake,' until Allah raises him from that resting place. But if he was a hypocrite, he says, 'I heard people saying something, so I said the same. I do not know.'They say, 'We already knew that you would say that.'Then the earth is told, 'Close in upon him.' So it closes in upon him until his ribs interlock, and he remains tormented within it until Allah raises him from that resting place."
Tirmidhi (1071) narrated it from Abu Salama Yahya bin Khalaf, who said, Bishr bin Mufaddal told us, from Abdul-Rahman bin Ishaq, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned the hadith. Tirmidhi said, hasan gharib.I say, it is as he said, for it contains Abdul-Rahman bin Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Harith Amiri Madani, who is disputed but whose hadith is hasan. Ibn Hibban (3117) also transmitted it through the route of Abdul-Rahman bin Ishaq with his chain, in similar fashion.
