We went out with the Prophet ﷺ for the funeral of a man from the Ansar. We reached the grave, and the burial niche had not yet been dug, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and we sat around him, still as though birds were perched on our heads. In his hand was a stick with which he kept poking at the ground. Then he raised his head and said, "Seek refuge in Allah from the torment of the grave," twice or three times. Then he said, "When the believing servant is at the point of departing this world and coming to the next, angels descend to him from heaven with faces bright as the sun, carrying a shroud from the shrouds of Paradise and perfume from the perfume of Paradise. They seat themselves as far from him as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits at his head and says, 'Pure soul, come out to forgiveness from Allah and to His pleasure.'"So it comes out, flowing as a drop flows from the mouth of a waterskin, and he takes it. When he has taken it, they do not leave it in his hand for even the blink of an eye before they take it from him and place it in that shroud and that perfume, and there comes from it a fragrance like the sweetest musk found on the face of the earth."Then they ascend with it, and they do not pass any gathering of angels without their asking, 'Whose is this pure soul?'"And they answer, 'So-and-so, son of so-and-so,' using the finest of the names by which he was called in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven with it. They ask that it be opened for him, and it is opened, and from every heaven its foremost angels escort him to the heaven above it, until he is brought to the seventh heaven."Then Allah
says, 'Record the book of My servant among the highest ranks, and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, to it I return them, and from it I shall bring them forth once again.'"So his soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him and seat him up. They ask him, 'Who is your Lord?'"He says, 'My Lord is Allah.'"They ask him, 'What is your religion?'"He says, 'My religion is Islam.'"They ask him, 'Who is this man who was sent among you?'"He says, 'He is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'"They ask him, 'How did you come to know this?'"He says, 'I read the Book of Allah, believed in it, and accepted it as true.'"Then a voice calls out from heaven, 'My servant has spoken the truth. Prepare a bed for him from Paradise, clothe him from Paradise, and open for him a door to Paradise.'"So there comes to him some of its breeze and its fragrance, and his grave is widened for him as far as he can see. Then a man of handsome face, fine clothing, and sweet scent comes to him and says, 'Rejoice at what will delight you. This is the day you were promised.'"He asks him, 'Who are you? Yours is a face that brings good news.'"He replies, 'I am your righteous deeds.'"So he says, 'My Lord, bring on the Hour, that I may return to my family and my wealth.'"But when the disbelieving servant is at the point of departing this world and coming to the next, angels with black faces descend to him from heaven carrying rough sackcloth, and they sit as far from him as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits at his head and says, 'Foul soul, come out to the displeasure of Allah and His wrath.'"So it scatters throughout his body, and he tears it out as a skewer is torn out of wet wool, and he takes it. When he has taken it, they do not leave it in his hand for even the blink of an eye before they wrap it in that sackcloth, and there comes from it a stench like the foulest reek of a carcass on the face of the earth."Then they ascend with it, and they do not pass any gathering of angels without their asking, 'Whose is this foul soul?'"And they answer, 'So-and-so, son of so-and-so,' using the ugliest of the names by which he was called in the world, until he is brought to the lowest heaven. Entry is sought for him, but it is not opened for him."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, "The gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle" [Araf 7:40].He continued, "Then Allah
says, 'Record his book in Sijjeen, in the lowest earth,' and his soul is flung down."Then he recited, "And whoever associates others with Allah, it is as though he has fallen from the sky and is snatched away by birds, or swept by the wind to a far-off place" [Hajj 22:31]."Then his soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him and seat him up. They ask him, 'Who is your Lord?'"He says, 'Alas, alas, I do not know.'"They ask him, 'What is your religion?'"He says, 'Alas, alas, I do not know.'"They ask him, 'Who is this man who was sent among you?'"He says, 'Alas, alas, I do not know.'"Then a voice calls out from heaven, 'He has lied. Prepare a bed for him from the Fire, and open for him a door to the Fire.'"So there comes to him some of its heat and its scorching wind, and his grave is made so narrow that his ribs are crushed together. Then a man of ugly face, wretched clothing, and foul stench comes to him and says, 'Receive the news of what will grieve you. This is the day you were promised.'"He asks, 'Who are you? Yours is a face that brings evil.'"He replies, 'I am your wicked deeds.'"So he says, 'My Lord, do not bring on the Hour.'"
Abu Dawud (4753) narrated it from Hannad bin Sari, from Abu Muawiya, from Amash, from Minhal, from Zazan, from Bara, and he related the hadith. The hadith was also narrated by Hannad bin Sari in his book Zuhd (339) and by Imam Ahmad (18534), both of them from Abu Muawiya. The wording given is that of Imam Ahmad, and Hannad's wording is similar to it. Nasai (2001) and Ibn Majah (1549) both narrated it through Minhal bin Amr with the same chain, in a very abridged form. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Minhal bin Amr, for he is "truthful." Hakim graded it sahih (1/37-39) and said, "It meets the standard of the two Shaykhs, for both of them relied on Minhal bin Amr and Zazan Abu Umar Kindi as evidence. This hadith contains many benefits for the people of the sunnah and a refutation of the innovators, and the two of them did not record it in full."I say, it is not as he said, for Minhal bin Amr belongs only to the men of Bukhari, while Zazan, who is Abu Umar Kindi, belongs to the men of Muslim, though Bukhari cited him in Adab al-Mufrad. Bayhaqi also graded it sahih and recorded it in Ithbat Azab Qabr (27), saying, "This is a lengthy hadith with a sahih chain of transmission, narrated by a group of trustworthy imams from Amash." He also recorded it in Shuab al-Iman (395) and said, "This is a hadith with a sahih chain of transmission."As for what Ibn Hibban said in his Sahih (7/387), "The report of Amash from Minhal bin Amr, from Zazan, from Bara, Amash heard it from Hasan bin Umara, from Minhal bin Amr, and Zazan did not hear it from Bara, so for that reason I did not include it," they have responded to him by noting that Zazan explicitly stated, "I heard Bara bin Azib say," and then related the hadith. This was mentioned by Abu Awana Isfarayini in his Sahih, as Ibn Qayyim stated in Tahzib Sunan (4/337).
