Muslim narrated it in the Book of Funerals (967) through several routes from Shuba, who said, Abu Hamza narrated to us, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it. Muslim said, Abu Jamra's name was Nasr bin Imran.Qurtubi said in Al-Mufhim (2/627), "This cloak was something the Prophet ﷺ used to wear and spread out. When he died, Ali and Abbas disagreed about taking it and quarreled over it, so Shaqran, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, took it and placed it in the grave, saying, 'By Allah, no one will ever wear it after him.'"Nawawi said, "Shafii and all our fellow scholars, along with other scholars, have stated explicitly that it is disliked to place a cloak, a padded mattress, a pillow, or anything similar beneath the deceased in the grave.""They responded to this hadith by saying that Shaqran acted alone in doing this, and none of the other companions agreed with him, nor did they even know of it. Shaqran only did this, as we have mentioned, because he disliked the idea of anyone wearing it after the Prophet ﷺ, since the Prophet ﷺ used to wear it and spread it out, so Shaqran could not bear the thought of anyone else taking its place after the Prophet ﷺ. Others disagreed with him, for Bayhaqi reported from Ibn Abbas that he disliked placing any garment beneath the deceased in his grave.""A cloak is a garment with a nap." End of Nawawi's words.
