We had carried the slain of the day of Uhud to bury them, when the Prophet's ﷺ caller came and announced, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands you to bury the slain where they fell." So we returned them.
كنا حملنا القتلى يوم أحد لندفنهم، فجاء منادي النبي ﷺ فقال: إن رسول الله ﷺ يأمركم أن تدفنوا القتلى في مضاجعهم فرددناهم.
Reported by Abu Dawud (3165), Tirmidhi (1717), Nasai (2005), and Ibn Majah (1516), all of them from the hadith of Aswad bin Qays, who heard Nabeeh Anazi say, I heard Jabir bin Abdullah, and he mentioned it.Ahmad reported it (14169) in this abridged form, and at length (15281) through two paths from Aswad bin Qays, from Nabeeh Anazi, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who said, "While I was among the onlookers, my aunt came with my father and my uncle, having placed them together on a camel, and I brought them into Madinah to bury them in our graveyard. Then a man caught up with us calling out, 'The Prophet ﷺ commands you to take the dead back and bury them where they were killed.' So we took them back and buried them where they had fallen."Its chain is hasan. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith, and Nabeeh is trustworthy." Ibn Hibban also graded it sahih (3183) through this same path.As for the statement of Hafiz about Nabeeh Anazi that he is "acceptable," this deserves scrutiny, since Abu Zura, Ajli, Ibn Hibban, and Tirmidhi all deemed him trustworthy, as mentioned above. So his standing does not fall below the rank of "truthful."
