I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, while the people had been routed from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until some of them reached as far as a mountain on the outskirts of Madinah, then they returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Hanzala bin Abu Amir Thaqafi had engaged Abu Sufyan bin Harb. When Hanzala had gotten the upper hand over him, Shaddad bin Aswad saw him and struck Hanzala with his sword until he killed him, just as he was about to kill Abu Sufyan.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Your companion Hanzala is being washed by the angels, so ask his wife about it."She said, "He went out in a state of major ritual impurity when he heard the call to arms."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That is why the angels have washed him."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: وقد كان الناس انهزموا عن رسول الله ﷺ حتى انتهى بعضهم إلى دون الأعراض إلى جبل بناحية المدينة، ثم رجعوا إلى رسول الله ﷺ، وقد كان حنظلة بن أبي عامر الثقفي هو، وأبو سفيان بن حرب، فلما استعلاه حنظلة رآه شداد بن الأسود، فعلاه شداد بالسيف حتى قتله وقد كاد يقتل أبا سفيان، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: إن صاحبكم حنظلة تغسله الملائكة، فسلوا صاحبته. فقالت: خرج وهو جنب لما سمع الهائعة، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: فذاك قد غسلته الملائكة.
Ibn Hibban narrated it in his Sahih (7025), and Hakim (3/204), through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim, who said, Saeed bin Yahya Umawi narrated to us, saying, my father narrated to me, he said, Ibn Ishaq said, Yahya bin Abbad bin Abdullah narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, and he related the hadith.Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, for he is a mudallis, except that he explicitly stated that he heard it directly. Hakim graded it sahih according to the standard of Muslim.The grandfather of Yahya bin Abbad is Abdullah bin Zubayr, which means the hadith is a report from a companion who did not himself witness the event, since Abdullah bin Zubayr had not yet reached the Day of Uhud, being only two years old at the time. The majority of scholars accept such reports from a companion as valid evidence, as Nawawi stated in al-Khulasa (3368).As for his words, "the outskirts of Madinah," this means its villages located in its valleys. It has also been said that the outskirts of Madinah refers to the low-lying fertile tracts where the crops and palm trees grow.And her saying, "al-haiah," means the sound that causes alarm and fear.
