The Prophet ﷺ was brought the funeral of a man to perform the prayer over him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Pray over your companion, for he has a debt upon him."Abu Qatada said, "It is upon me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "In full?"He replied, "In full."So he prayed over him.In another narration, the debt was eighteen or nineteen dirhams.
أن النبي ﷺ أتى بجنازة رجل ليصلي عليها فقال النبي ﷺ: صلوا على صاحبكم، فإن عليه دينا. قال أبو قتادة: هو علي. فقال رسول الله ﷺ: بالوفاء؟ قال: بالوفاء، فصلى عليه. وفي رواية كان عليه ثمانية عشر، أو تسعة عشر در هما.
Tirmidhi (1069), Nasai (1960), and Ibn Majah (2407) all narrated it through various routes from Shuba, from Uthman bin Abdullah bin Mawhab, who said, "I heard Abdullah bin Abu Qatada," from his father, and he mentioned it. The second narration was mentioned by Ibn Majah. Tirmidhi said, hasan sahih. Ibn Khuzayma (3060) also graded it sahih and narrated it through this route, and the hadith has other routes as well.
