I prayed behind Ibn Abbas at a funeral, and he recited the Opening of the Book. He said, "So that they may know it is a sunnah."
صليت خلف ابن عباس على جنازة، فقرأ بفاتحة الكتاب، وقال: ليعلموا أنها سنة.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1335) from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Ghundar narrated to us, Shuba narrated to us, from Saad, from Talha, and he related it.As for the place of reciting Fatihah, it is after the first takbir. Tirmidhi (1027) said, after citing the hadith of Ibn Abbas through the route of Sufyan, from Saad bin Ibrahim, "This is a hasan sahih hadith. The practice among some of the people of knowledge from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and others is that they choose to recite Fatihah after the first takbir, and this is the view of Shafii, Ahmad, and Ishaq. Some people of knowledge said, one does not recite in the funeral prayer, rather it consists only of praise of Allah, prayer upon the Prophet ﷺ, and supplication for the deceased, and this is the view of Thawri and others among the people of Kufa." End of quote. See for more, Minna Kubra (3/57).As for what Nasai narrated (1987) from Haytham bin Ayub, from Ibrahim bin Saad, from his father, from Talha, it contains, "So he recited Fatihah and a surah, and he recited aloud so that we could hear him. When he finished, I took his hand and asked him, and he said, 'It is sunnah and true.'" So it adds to it the recitation of another surah along with Fatihah, just as he recited aloud in his recitation, and its chain is sahih. The mention of reciting another surah is also established with Ibn Jarud (537) through two other routes from Ibrahim bin Saad, and Nawawi graded its chain sahih in Majmu (5/234). Perhaps he did this once or twice to show that it is permissible, not that it is a continuous sunnah, otherwise Bayhaqi said (4/38), "The mention of the surah is not preserved."
